The painting I have chosen to remake is "Portrait of Gertrude Stein" by Pablo Picasso. Born in 1881 and died in 1973, Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor who was renowned for his influential art at the time. Stein was a friend and important patron to Picasso, as much of his success was widely influenced by her. Because of this, Picasso painted a portrait of her, starting in 1905 and completing it in 1906. However, this was more than a portrait of Stein as Picasso tried to express her personality and qualities rather than simply painting out her physical appearance. The painting was influenced by Picasso's recent encounter with Iberian and African art, which he believed conveyed deeper meanings than traditional Western art.
I chose this painting because it seemed very mysterious and disturbing, like a painting from a horror movie. The dull colours and her stone face gave me the chills, prompting me to further explore the story behind the painting. Another reason why I chose this was because I was curious about the painter's intention behind the piece and why the woman was portrayed the way she was.
To remake the photo, I first thought about the setting and her pose, as well as her clothing. With her thick, baggy clothes, I assumed she was cold and decided to put on a few layers. From her pose, it was suggested that she was relaxed but also deep in thought. Her background reminded me of a bare bedroom. With all this in mind, I decided to modernise the portrait as I felt it was the best way to remake it. Her thick robe like jacket was represented as a winter jacket while the cloth around her neck became a scarf. Since my jacket didn't cover my legs like the robe, I placed a piece of fabric on my lap to replicate the look. Stein's cap was replaced with a beanie and the background was my bedroom.
